January News & Recs

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas Crazies, had space to go gently into the New Year, or like many of us are just emerging from the Covid Cave.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the raffle last month in support of East Village Community School. As promised, this month will bring the second raffle to support New Amsterdam School. We recently spent 2.5 years at NAS receiving the warmest early childhood Waldorf education and I’m thrilled to support their fundraising efforts.

Rewinding the same format: Every $20 donation is one entry. (Donate $60 = 3 entries, $100 = 5 entries, you get the idea). Simply donate through THIS link, snap a screen shot of your donation and send it along to me. On January 27th at 1:30pm EST I will select one person to win the drawing shown above. Good luck!

Stay True is as much a reflection of a coming of age story of friendships in the formative college years, with a foretold tragedy, as his own driving desire to construct his personality from the sense of ownership that young people claw at when encountering new ideas, ways of being, signifiers of culture dripping through the things we listen to, the clothes we wear, what books or zines we are picking up, or what liking Nirvana versus Pearl Jam can existentially be judged about a person. Overlaid on these universal rights of passage is the reflection on the complex minutia of Asian American experiences centered on family history as it relates to diasporic community development, country of origin, parental history, and its overall impact to ones sense of belonging in America. Sensitive in the reflection of love, raw in his self assessment of his younger self, and poetic in his insight without being heavy handed of what a tragic loss feels like over time, Stay True weaves a gorgeous story that took Hsu over twenty years to bring together.
