Each month I feel a small need to acknowledge the turmoil and heartbreak unfolding around us before sharing news from my tiny corner of the world. It would feel dissonant not to say that my heart is heavy, as I imagine many others’ are, as wars escalate, powerful men profit from them, and the violence leaves deep scars on both people and the planet: poisoned water and soil, devastated landscapes, and communities forced to carry the physical and psychological toll for generations. Lately I’ve been turning toward art more than ever as a kind of balm.

The bright news in my life is that this summer I will be an artist-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and am deeply honored to receive the Henderson Award for a mid-career woman-identifying painter. Headlands is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the Marin Headlands, where a former military base has been transformed into a vibrant artist residency and exhibition program. Perched between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, the landscape is immense and elemental: coastal mountains, fog rolling in from the sea, and open sky stretching in every direction. The residency offers a rare stretch of time and space for focused work and conversation among artists.

Equally meaningful is Headlands’ support of artist-parents: I’ve been offered the much coveted family house for the full month. We’ll spend August surrounded by wild landscape while we work in a large studio and live closely with the rhythms of the place and community.

Our summers tend to organize themselves around being outdoors as much as possible—hiking, swimming, picnicking, and endless games of catch. I’m already swooning at the thought of long walks with a our sketchbooks in tow.

If you have Bay Area art friends you’d like to introduce me to, please do. One of the most meaningful aspects of residencies is meeting other artists and engaging with the local art community. I’ve been deeply committed to building a career that isn’t centered solely in New York, and residencies help open those wider artistic conversations and new partnerships.

The Landing Gallery, Los Angeles

Congratulations are also in order to my Los Angeles home base, The Landing Gallery, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary with two exhibitions: one this past fall devoted to 21st-century art and design, and the current presentation highlighting artists from the gallery’s contemporary program.

I’ve been deeply grateful to exhibit with a program that places my work in dialogue with such a wide range of artists: spanning historical figures to my contemporary peers. Every solo exhibition with Gerard has been a rare opportunity to present the work at full scale in the gallery’s expansive space, guided by his thoughtful eye and careful approach to installation. If you find yourself in Los Angeles, I hope you’ll stop by.

Monograph Monthly

Christina Forrer by Christina Forrer, Robert Cozzolino, and Sabrina Orah Mark

I was thrilled to receive an early copy of artist Christina Forrer’s new monograph. I’ve admired her psychologically charged tapestry weavings and drawings since seeing her 2022 solo exhibition at Luhring Augustine, and it’s a luxury to spend time with these beautifully reproduced works. Her images feel like a collision of fable and fairy tale, rendered in fiber—psychedelic meditations on the strange and emotional terrain of being human.

I’ve long loved the podcast City Arts & Lectures, a San Francisco–based series of live conversations with people from the arts and cultural thinkers. Two recent episodes delivered exactly what I needed.

First, a lively reading by Sally Mann from her new book Art Work: On the Creative Life, followed by a conversation with her longtime friend and pen pal, photographer Ted Orland. Hearing Mann read the text herself animated it in ways that
